Hard Cutting and Horticulture
Learn more about our hard cutting practices and the science behind them. Using this knowledge we use hard cutting to create a strong foundation from which feature plants can grow and develop. Also available are horticulture consultations. These can be valuable when considering starting a new garden or redesigning part of an existing one. Learn more below.
Hard Cutting
Plants, over millions of years, have evolved to regrow after extreme stress, damage and injury. Take gumtrees regrowing after a bushfire as an example of the extreme damage that a plant can recover from. The evolutionary feature allows for a variety of hard cuts to be conducted on most tree and shrub species, allowing for severe reshaping, resizing and changing of growth habits.
Our cutting methods have been developed noting this survival mechanism of plants as well as carefully understanding plant growth, hormone function and transportation of water and minerals within plants. Our cutting principles involve stressing the plant enough to achieve the required hormone balance to cause epicormic nodes to develop.

As a result our hard cutting offers an alternative to tree removal, If a tree or shrub has outgrown the area. Reshaping, If the growth habit of a plant has become sparse and undesirable.
Most common tree and shrub species can be cut by this method. Timing is crucial to achieve the best result. This timing varies between plant species’, and in most cases the regrowth is predictable and to some extent controllable. However there is always an element of unknown in how a plant will respond, and in very few cases, often when a plant is already unhealthy or over mature, a cut can prove fatal to the plant.
